9-8-8 More than a number

Beginning July 16, 2022, the use of ‘988’ went into effect.  You may call, text or chat 988.

If you are would like emotional support, if you are thinking about suicide or are worried about a friend or loved one, you may call 988 and speak to a trained crisis counselor who will listen to you, provide support, and connect you to resources. There are Spanish-speaking counselors, translation and interpretation services and services for Veterans.

The availability of 988 is a tremendous step toward providing life-saving support that will help countless people experiencing a mental health, substance use or suicide crisis and their families.

When you call or text 988, you will be connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network.  The Lifeline can respond to any type of mental health crisis or emotional distress. It is free, confidential and open to a person in crisis or someone calling on behalf of another.

The availability of 988 is a great step to helping people in crisis and their families.  Work to improve the full crisis response system is only the beginning.  Efforts to build the system’s local capacity in our state to help everyone in crisis will continue in the weeks, months and years to come.
